Tottenham Hotspurs have confirmed that striker Jermain Defoe will move to MLS side Toronto FC by February 28, 2014.

The news of Jermain Defoe’s move to MLS outfit Toronto FC started when Canadian rapper Drake pleaded to the spurs striker to make the switch.

Drake, who is a good friend with the spurs striker, suggested that he make the switch to Canada to help his beloved team, and at the same time get more playing time than he is getting in north London, Eyes and Voice learned.

According to reports, Eyes and Voice learned that Drake who was in September made the Toronto Raptors’ “global ambassador” called Defoe to persuade the striker to move the MLS side.

Today 10, January, Tottenham have official confrimed the transfer news that Defoe will leave White Hart Lane, bringing down a 15-year career in English football.

Defoe, 31, insists he will give his all until he leaves Spurs, while Tim Sherwood said it was an opportunity Defoe couldn’t miss.
Spurs head coach, Tim Sherwood also stated: “This is a great opportunity for Jermain and he feels it is one that he wishes to pursue.”
According to the club’s website, Defoe stated: “Everybody knows how much this club means to me and I will play my heart out for the team and the fans until my last kick for the club. I have had a fantastic time here and the fans have always been amazing to me.”I am grateful for the opportunity for myself and my family to experience living overseas and for me to play in the MLS with a contract that will take me to the age of 35.

“I have no doubt I shall be coming back as a fan supporting the team in the years to come too.”

Defoe agreed a four-year deal for £6 million, worth £68,000 per week, potentially rising to £90,000.

Tottenham Hotspur also agreed Advertising and Marketing Rights deal with Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), which is related to the deal with Jermain Defoe.

Jermain Defoe, first joined Spurs from West Ham in February 2004, making 177 appearances and scoring 64 goals before joining Portsmouth four years later. He moved back to White Hart Lane a year later and hit 78 goals in 185 games.
