Real Madrid defeats Atletico Madrid in final to become Europe’s most successful clubs with 10th UEFA Champions League title
Real Madrid end their search for a 10th European Cup with a 4-1 win against arch-rival Atletico.
Sergio Ramos, Gareth Bale, Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo helped Real Madrid claim their first Champions League crown since 2002. Real came from behind in extra time to defeat their arch-rival Atletico Madrid in a thrilling UEFA Champions League final in Lisbon.
Diego Godin headed in the first goal – capitalising on a goal keeping error by Iker Casillas to give Atletico the first half lead.
With their fierce defensive line-up, Atletico protected their lead ’till the 93rd minutes when Sergio Ramos finally broke Atletico defence and headed in the equaliser from Luka Modric’s corner.
At the second half of the extra time, Gareth Bale put Real Madrid ahead, also with a header before Marcelo scored the third goal and Cristiano Ronaldo sealed the victory by scoring his 17th goal of this Champions League from a penalty after he was fouled by Gabi.
This victory means a 10th European Cup for Real Madrid. Real is the first club to claim the trophy 10 times, an achievement known as “La Decima” (the 10th).
