After what seemed like a lifetime of waiting and wondering, today ITV and Simon Cowell officially confirmed that Mel B will be joining the panel when the hit TV show returns later this year.

Mel B, who had previously been a guest judge on the UK version in 2012 was apparently Simon’s number one choice ahead of ‘Britain’s Got Talent‘ judge Alesha Dixon and radio DJ Sara Cox.

Speaking on her signing Simon said,

I am thrilled that Mel B has agreed to be a judge on The X Factor this year. I thought she was fantastic as a guest judge a couple of years ago. She is feisty, opinionated and, I believe, will be a great mentor.”

Mel B was also quick to share her good news saying,

“I’m so excited to be joining The X Factor – I loved being a guest judge back in 2012,”

“I’ve always thought honesty is the best policy when being a judge and that’s what I’m going to bring more of this year – whether it’s spotting an incredible singer, giving someone a reality check or debating with Simon over who’s got it wrong!

“Now I can’t wait to get started and find some amazing talent.”

The former Spice Girl has a long history with talent show judging. She was previously a judge on the Australian version of ‘The X Factor’ for two years before joining ‘America’s Got Talent‘ last year.

Alongside that she was also a judge on the short lived U.K. dance competition ‘Stepping Out‘ and this year signed up to be a coach on ‘The Voice Kids Australia‘.

This will now mean that she will be juggling three different talent competitions roles, in three different continents – roughly around the same time!

In 2007 she was runner-up on the American ‘Dancing with the Stars‘ and she later hosted the Australian version of the programme in 2012. Back in the earlier 2000’s she also presented the UK talent show ‘This Is My Moment‘.

Another interesting note is that way back in 2004 Mel B was originally set to join Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh on the first series of ‘The X Factor‘, but she was later replaced by Sharon Osbourne.

Since then her name has always popped into discussions when a new judge had been considered for the role. But now it seems that the stars have finally aligned!

This years ‘X Factor‘ judges will now consist of Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh, Cheryl Cole and Mel B. It will be Simon and Cheryl’s first series since 2010 and will be Louis’ eleventh consecutive run.

Past judges on the UK version include Sharon Osbourne, Dannii Minogue (who is now on the Australian version), Kelly Rowland (who recently judged Season 3 of the U.S. version), Gary Barlow, Tulisa and Nicole Scherzinger (who was also a judge on ‘The X Factor USA‘).
