87th Annual Academy Award Nominations Revealed

Oscars 2015

The nominations for the 87th Academy Award are out and there is plenty to discuss!

Birdman‘ and ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel‘ lead the pack with nine nominations each including Best Picture and ‘The Imitation Game‘ is just behind them with eight.

The Best Picture category features eight nominees this year which include the three mentioned above and ‘American Sniper‘, ‘Boyhood‘, ‘Selma‘, ‘The Theory of Everything‘ and ‘Whiplash‘.

The Lead Actor category featured many predicted nominees including Steve Carrell, Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game), Michael Keaton (Birdman) and Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything). Surprisingly Bradley Cooper secured the fifth slot for his performance in ‘American Sniper‘, meaning previous favourites Jake Gyllenhall (Nightcrawler) and David Oyelowo (Selma) were left out.

The Lead Actress nominees features Marion Cotillard (Two Days, One Night), Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Julianne Moore (Still Alice), Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) and Reese Witherspoon (Wild). All five women were previously tipped for nominations but notable snubs in this category include Jennifer Aniston (Cake) and five-time nominee and recent Golden Globe winner Amy Adams (Big Eyes).

Laura Dern managed to sneak (and edge out Jessica Chastain) into the Best Supporting Actress category for her role in ‘Wild‘ and Meryl Streep celebrates her first Oscar nomination in nearly twelve months for her supporting role in ‘Into the Woods‘. This now extends her own Oscar record to nineteen career nominations!

Emma Stone celebrates her first Oscar nomination for her performance in ‘Birdman‘ and Keira Knightley (The Imitation Game) finally returns to the nominations list for the first time since 2006. However Patricia Arquette remains the frontrunner in this category for her performance in ‘Boyhood‘.

Supporting Actor featured no surprises with frontrunner J.K. Simmons (Whiplash), Robert Duvall (The Judge), Mark Ruffalo (Foxcatcher), Ethan Hawke (Boyhood) and Edward Norton (Birdman)

One noticeable snub was ‘The Lego Movie‘ in the Best Animated Feature Film category. The acclaimed film was universally predicated to be acknowledged but was left out in favour of smaller releases such as ‘Song of the Sea‘ and ‘The Boxtrolls‘.
