Recap of the 2016 Billboard Music Awards

Recap of the 2016 Billboard Music Awards

The stars turned out in full effect last night for the 2016 Billboard Music Awards, making it one of the must see music events of the year!

Celine Dion stole the show with a powerful performance of her new single ‘The Show Must Go On‘. The music superstar was there to receive the prestigious Icon Award, which was presented to her by her son René-Charles. An emotional Celine dedicated the award to her late husband René Angélil who passed away earlier this year.

Britney Spears opened the show with a medley of her biggest hits, which was in celebration of her receiving the Billboard Millennium Award. Britney award performances are now pretty much a rarity, but over the years she has always showed love to this award show having performed in 2011 and in 2015.

Other performers of the night included Rihanna who performed ‘Love on the Brain‘, P!nk returned to the stage with ‘Just Like Fire‘ and Ariana Grande took centre stage with ‘Dangerous Woman and ‘Into You‘.

Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani performed their new duet ‘Go Ahead and Break My Heart‘, Demi Lovato performed ‘Cool for the Summer‘ again, while pal Nick Jonas performed his underrated track ‘Close‘.

Kesha also performed with ‘It Ain’t Me, Babe‘ which was a tribute to Bob Dylan. After much controversy regarding whether her label would allow her to perform or not, it was nice to see that she was given this honour.

Despite controversy from some, Madonna did pay tribute to Prince with an excellent cover of the Prince penned Sinéad O’Connor song ‘Nothing Compares 2 U‘, she was later joined by music legend Stevie Wonder who performed ‘Purple Rain‘. The tribute was simple and poignant and it is something that Prince fans should be satisfied with.

As the Billboard Award winners are pretty much based on facts and figures, none of the winners came as much of a surprise. The biggest winner of the night was The Weeknd who took home 8 trophies. Adele followed him with 5 wins including Top Artist and other winners included Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, One Direction, Fetty Wap, Wiz Khalifa and more.
