[EYES AND VOICE] At least 77 people are reported to have been killed and dozens more injured after a truck drove into a crowd in an attack late on Thursday (July 14) in the French city of Nice.
A truck drove into a crowd celebrating Bastille Day. According to reports at least 77 people are dead and upwards of 50 more injured, Eyes And Voice learned.
The driver of the truck, which was loaded with weapons, has been killed. Police shot and killed the driver, who drove the heavy, long-distance truck at speed for well over 100 meters (yards) along the famed Promenade des Anglais seafront, hitting the mass of spectators late in the evening, Eyes And Voice learned.
Eyewitnesses say the driver picked up speed to slam the lorry into revellers gathered, mowing people down along the way.
He then got down from the vehicle and started shooting, sending hundreds of panic-stricken men, women and children running in terror.
One woman told reporters she and others had fled in terror: “The lorry came zig-zagging along the street. We ran into a hotel and hid in the toilets with lots of people.”
Nice Matin journalist Damien Allemand, who was at the waterside, said the fireworks display had finished and the crowd had got up to leave when they heard a noise and cries.
“A fraction of a second later, an enormous white truck came along at a crazy speed, turning the wheel to mow down the maximum number of people,” he said.
“I saw bodies flying like bowling pins along its route. Heard noises, cries that I will never forget.”
Another woman told the station she was sheltering in a restaurant on the promenade with some 200 other people, where things had calmed down about two hours after the incident.
An officer said: “We are terrified and we want to express our sincere condolences to the families involved.
“Today, we must act. We are currently in touch with the State authorities who are dealing with this crisis.”
Graphic images from the scene show bodies strewn across the city’s landmark promenade, which runs some four miles along the waterfront.
The trucker driver came out shouting, Eyes And Voice learned.
French officials say the driver was shot dead by police at the scene, with images showing the windscreen of the lorry riddled with bullet holes.
Authorities are investigating if he acted alone following media reports that a possible accomplice had fled the scene.
Identity papers of a French-Tunisian were also discovered, according to a police source quoted by news agency AFP. The papers indicate the man is a 31-year-old resident of Nice.
State of Emergency
France is currently under a state of emergency following the Islamic State attacks in Paris in November that left 130 dead dead.
Hours earlier, French President Francois Hollande, said that a state of emergency put in place after the Paris attacks in November 13 would not be extended when it expires on July 26.
We here at Eyes And Voice sends our condolences to families and friends who have been affected.
