2016 MTV VMA Nominations Revealed

It’s that time of year and once again it looks like it will be a good evening for the industries  two leading ladies, as Beyoncé and Adele score the most nominations as this years MTV Video Music Awards!

Beyoncé leads the pack with 11 nominations including Video of the Year for ‘Formation‘. The Lemonade project is further celebrated with further nominations for its video’s ‘Hold Up‘ and ‘Freedom‘.

Hello‘ by Adele celebrates 7 nominations, while ‘Send My Love‘ also received love in the Best Visual Effects category. The British sensation is hoping to win her first official VMA after receiving three technical awards back in 2011.

Kanye West’s controversial video for ‘Famous‘ has surprisingly scored a Video of the Year nomination which will no doubt coincide nicely with his recent feud with Taylor Swift. This is all so predictable…

The video joins Hello, Formation, Hotline Bling and Justin Bieber’s Sorry in the prestigious category. It’s seems to be a tough category this year but making a decision just based on true impact, recognition and acclaim I have to give Beyoncé the edge on this one.

Best New Artist seems to be a tight race also as DNCE, Bryson Tiller, Desiigner, Lukas Graham and Zara Larsson all battle it out for MTV award recognition. Having all experienced legit success in the past year, it will be interesting to see the outcome of this one!

The general theme of the nominations over the last couple of years has followed a formula of nominating videos for hits singles instead of artistic/left field music videos. While many of this years videos are well deserving nominees, some just fit a criteria into who they are and how it will reach out to certain fan bases. But with the dwindling impact of MTV, its no surprise that they have gone down this route with the choice in nominees…

This years awards is scheduled for August 28 and will take place in Madison Square Garden for the very first time. I have always felt that some of the most memorable VMA’s having taken place in NYC, so it’s nice to see the show return to its true home.
