2016 MTV VMAs: Full List of Winners

Returning to its home in New York City, the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards took place last night and featured a night of Rihanna (literally), Britney returning to her rightful stage and Beyoncé just defining her existence on humanity!

Jokes aside in one of the better VMAs in recent years, the night saw Beyoncé take home eight moonmen to become the most decorated artist in VMA history. For the second time in her career she took home the award for Best Video of the Year for ‘Formation‘. The video also received awards for Best Pop Video, Best Direction, Best Choreography, Best Editing and Best Cinematography. ‘Hold Up‘ was crowned this years Best Female Video and just to top it of the whole ‘Lemonade‘ visual was award the Breakthrough Long Form Video! All of which is rightfully deserved!

Later on in the evening Beyoncé took to the stage to perform another medley of tracks from her latest album which no doubt stole the show and and simply proved why she is the best performer of our generation.

Rihanna performed a medley of her hits to celebration being the recipient of this years Michael Jackson’s Video Vanguard Award. Her performances were scattered throughout the evening and helped sum up how dominant the Barbadian beauty has been in the industry for the last ten years. Later on her ”good friend” Drake presented her with the special golden moonman.

As mentioned Britney Spears returned to the VMA stage to perform her new single ‘Make Me…” with G-Eazy. The VMAs and Britney go hand in hand and its just nice to see her getting back to her confident best!

The evening was a good one for Fifth Harmony as they won two awards including Best Collaboration for ‘Work from Home‘ and Song of the Summer for ‘Flex‘. Only a handful of girl groups can claim to have won a VMA so the fact that these girls now already have three, only helps validate their current popularity.

Calvin Harris showed up for Brits as he won the Best Male Video award for ‘This is What You Came For‘ and Best Electronic Video for ‘How Deep Is Your Love’. Drake’s ‘Hotline Bling‘ was rightfully awarded the Best Hip-Hop Video prize and DNCE surprisingly won Best New Artist!

Alicia Keys made a powerful speech by reading and later singing a poem to honour Martin Luther King Jr., who gave his ”I Have a Dream” speech 53 years ago today. The moment led to a further standing ovation for Alicia, who also continues to make bold statement with her stripped back/make-up less image (she still looks amazing either way!).

Overall I think its safe to the say that the VMAs are at their best when they are in New York City, I don’t know what it is but I just think that location brings out the best in everyone for some reason? So here’s hoping the VMAs return there even more in the future.
